Es el Laureado del Premio Planeta Azul 2021 (equivalente al Premio Nobel del Medio Ambiente); Vicepresidente del Panel Intergubernamental de Expertos sobre el Cambio Climático de las Naciones Unidas (IPCC-AR4), quien compartió el Premio Nobel de la Paz en 2007; Oficial de la Orden Nacional de la Legión de Honor – la más alta distinción francesa otorgada por el Presidente de Francia; receptor del premio Deshamanya – la más alta distinción de Sri Lanka otorgada por el Presidente de Sri Lanka; y otros premios mundiales. También es presidente de la Comisión de Expertos Presidenciales sobre la Visión de Sri Lanka Sostenible 2030; y Asesor Principal Honorario del Gobierno de Sri Lanka.
