Se incorporó a la aerolínea en 1997 como Director Financiero, antes de la salida a bolsa de la empresa, y desempeñó un papel fundamental a la hora de garantizar su cotización en las bolsas de Dublín, Londres y Nasdaq. Cuando Cawley se incorporó a Ryanair, esta tenía 9 aviones, volaba en 8 rutas y transportaba menos de 3 millones de pasajeros al año. El año anterior a su jubilación, en 2014, la aerolínea había crecido hasta los 300 aviones, operaba 1600 rutas y transportaba 82 millones de pasajeros. Durante su etapa en Ryanair, el valor de mercado de la aerolínea pasó de 400 millones de euros a más de 10.000 millones.
Cawley desempeñó un papel fundamental en la planificación y ejecución de este crecimiento.
