Ingrid Betancourt fue parte del senado de Colombia de 1998 a 2002. Es activista anticorrupción y exsenadora. Fue secuestrada por guerrilleros marxistas de las Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (FARC) mientras hacía campaña por la Presidencia de Colombia.
Ingrid Betancourt había sido crítica de las FARC durante su campaña; prometiendo frenar el narcotráfico, la corrupción y los métodos de secuestro de personas inocentes de las FARC. Incluso se reunió con líderes de las FARC, implorándoles que pusieran fin a esta práctica inhumana, pero al final se convirtió en víctima de sus tácticas rebeldes.
Estuvo cautiva durante casi siete años en la vasta selva tropical de Colombia, una jungla tan densa que el suelo es completamente invisible desde el aire.
El 2 de julio de 2008 fue liberada junto con otros 14 rehenes en un atrevido rescate organizado por el ejército colombiano. Ha dicho a menudo desde su liberación que no busca venganza contra sus captores y está a favor del diálogo y la reconciliación para poner fin a la guerra de guerrillas de décadas en Colombia.
