Nacido en Goslar en 1959, Sigmar Gabriel estudió política, sociología y alemán en la Universidad de Gotinga. En 1987 aprobó el segundo examen estatal de profesor de gramática y trabajó como profesor de formación profesional de adultos hasta 1990.
Sigmar Gabriel es miembro del Partido Socialdemócrata de Alemania desde 1977 y de 2009 a 2017 fue su presidente. Tras varios cargos diferentes dentro de su partido en Baja Sajonia, Gabriel fue primer ministro del Estado de Baja Sajonia de 1999 a 2003, antes de ocupar diferentes puestos ministeriales en la política federal.
Sigmar Gabriel es presidente de Atlantik-Brücke e.V., miembro de la Comisión Trilateral y del Consejo Europeo de Relaciones Exteriores. También es miembro del consejo de administración del International Crisis Group y del consejo asesor de Deloitte. Desde mayo de 2020 es miembro del consejo de supervisión del Deutsche Bank.
