Al principio de su carrera, Komorowksi fue editor clandestino durante el movimiento democrático. En 1980 fue detenido por participar en una manifestación con el Movimiento de Defensa de los Derechos Humanos y Cívicos y fue encarcelado. Komorowski fue elegido diputado en 1991 y de nuevo en 1993. Entre 1997 y 2000 presidió la Comisión Parlamentaria de Defensa Nacional, al término de la cual fue Ministro de Defensa.
